Devin Smith will start the 2016 season just like he started his rookie season. The Jets announced the 2015 second-round pick will start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Smith is still recovering from a torn ACL injury sustained last December. This designation means Smith cannot return to the field until at least Week 7. Last year, Smith was placed on the PUP list while he recovered from broken ribs and a punctured lung. That injury occurred during one of New York’s very first practices of training camp.
The Ohio State product played in 10 games last season, but caught only nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. He struggled to find rapport with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and possessed a limited route tree.
A second PUP designation in two years will definitely harm Smith’s development. It’s too early to discuss whether Smith is already a bust, but he’s definitely trending in the wrong direction.
