Jets sign LT Kelvin Beachum, kicker Chandler Catanzaro

The New York Jets had been quiet throughout the first 30 hours of the official free agency window. But the team quickly found its probable replacements for left tackle Ryan Clady and kicker Nick Folk, who were let go earlier in the offseason.

The Jets announced the signings of left tackle Kelvin Beachum and kicker Chandler Catanzaro Friday evening. The financial details of both deals are currently unknown.

Beachum is entering his sixth professional season and spent the 2016 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars after four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 27-year-old tackle started 15 games in his lone season with the Jaguars and has made 39 career starts. Pro Football Focus rated Beachum as the No. 63 tackle in the league with a 44.3 overall grade. However, Beachum’s 68.7 pass protection grade ranked 43rd among all tackles.

Beachum has dealt with a variety of injuries during his five-year career and has played a full season just once in his career.

Catanzaro is coming off of an ugly season with the Arizona Cardinals, during which he made only 21-of-28 field goal attempts and missed four point-after tries. Catanzaro has converted 78-of-91 field goal attempts during his three-year career. He has a decent leg and has hit 27-of-37 attempts from 40 yards or farther.

Both players will likely step in as starters for the rebuilding Jets, who have plenty of other holes to fill. New York freed up roughly $45 million in salary cap space by purging the roster of overpriced veterans. Beachum and Catanzaro should be relatively inexpensive signings who can keep the team relatively competitive.
