With the second pick they acquired from the Browns the New York Jets have taken Louisiana Lafayette running back Elijah McGuire in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
McGuire enjoyed a very nice collegiate career with the Ragin’ Cajuns, topping 1,000 rushing yards every year for the last three seasons. A solid 4.53 combine time and a 5-foot-10, 214-pound frame gives McGuire great acceleration.
He was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2014 after rushing for 1,264 yards and 14 touchdowns that season. McGuire can also potentially slide in on special teams as he returned a total of 28 punts in his four-year collegiate career.
So after taking back-to-back safeties, back-to-back wide receivers, a tight end, and a defensive end, the Jets opted to upgrade their backfield in the sixth round.
It will be interesting to see how McGuire fits in with the current backfield tandem of Matt Forte and Bilal Powell.
