Rookie free safety Marcus Maye left the New York Jets’ season finale against the New England Patriots with an ankle injury.
Todd Bowles confirmed after the game that the injury was a sprain, but said an MRI came back negative. He didn’t say whether the injury was a high ankle sprain. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported during the game it was a high ankle sprain.
Maye was called for pass interference on the same play that he sustained the injury, which allowed New England to move into the Jets’ red zone. The Patriots scored soon after and took a 14-3 lead late in the first half. New England went on to win the game handily, 26-6.
The 2017 second-round pick has teamed up with sixth overall pick Jamal Adams to form the unit with perhaps the brightest future on the team. Maye entered Week 17 with 78 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble – not a bad stat line for the starter’s rookie year.
