The New York Jets might be severely short-handed against the New Orleans Saints Sunday at the Superdome because of injuries. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson won’t be taking the field against New Orleans, but for a different reason.
Jets coach Todd Bowles announced Friday Wilkerson will not travel with the team to Louisiana and is out for Sunday’s contest. Bowles classified it as a coach’s decision.
Bowles, in usual fashion, offered no further explanation for his decision. But this isn’t the first time the third-year head coach has disciplined Wilkerson. Just two weeks ago, Bowles sat Wilkerson for almost the entire first quarter for being late to a meeting. The former first-round pick was also disciplined last year for missing a meeting.
Wilkerson has eight sacks the last two years after signing a five-year, $86 million contract that many celebrated at the time. Wilkerson has been nothing but a disappointment since and his benching Sunday marks another blemish on what was supposed to be a much better tenure with Gang Green.
